Description:

A scene in Tahiti, in 1777, with two men and two women dancing before a hut, spectators on either side. Three drummers are in the background under the shelter of the hut, with a fourth person clapping the rhythm. The dancers appear to be standing on a large woven mat. A dramatic moonlit view among palm trees of the Endeavour's butcher (Henry Jeffs) holding a curved knife and about to cut the throat of a Tahitian woman. Her husband, Tepau i Ahurai Tamaiti, is standing on the right, waving his arms, an axe at his feet.
